Legendary track and field star and former Olympian Bruce Pirnie passes away

Former Olympic athlete and long-time local track coach Bruce Pirnie has passed away last week. He was a gold medalist at the Pan Am Games.

Bruce Pirnie was born in Boston on September 20, 1942, however he eventually moved to Canada in the 1970s where he dominated in the shotput scene. Pirnie won many provincial championships and was then chosen for the world "All Star" International Amateur Athletic Federation team in 1971. In 1972 he qualified for the Olympics being held in Munich and was also selected as captain of the track and field team.

Bruce Pirnie won gold at the 1975 Pan Am Games in Mexico City and was once again named captain of the track and field team for the 1976 Olympics being held in Montreal

The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame inducted Bruce Pirnie in 1987 for all of his achievements over the previous two decades.

Bruce Pirnie had been recently watching the 2024 Paris Olympic Games from the hospital and he was able to watch Canadian thrower Ethan Ratzberg get the gold medal in the men's hammer throw, which likely put one final smile on Bruce's face.
