While the NHL just crowned the Florida Panthers as Stanley Cup champions, the Washington Capitals top affiliate Hersey Bears have just pulled off a remarkable feat.

The AHL club won the league championship for the second time in a row, becoming back-to-back Calder Cup Champions.

While the AHL is primarily a developmental league for NHL clubs, this is still a big deal. With the decline of the KHL, the American Hockey League has become arguably the second-best professional hockey league in the world, even in the shadow if the NHL. Notably though, there is far less parity in the league, highlighted by the fact that the Bears faced the Coachella Valley Firebirds in both years.

Apparently this year, the team celebrations went a little bit too far. One player, who has gone unnamed, had to be transported to a local hospital the night after the finals concluded. Luckily, the visit was largely precautionary, and he was released the following day.

The player experienced a medical issue during a team celebration, and out of an abundance of caution, the player was transported to Hershey Medical Center.

The player was evaluated and then released early [Wednesday] morning after officials determined no additional medical assistance was needed.

With the AHL becoming such an important league, it will be interesting to see if the Calder Cup starts getting more attention in the coming years. Be sure to tune in next year to see if the team can pull off the highly coveted threepeat.
