After the Toronto Maple Leafs dropped their first game to the Boston Bruins in terrible fashion, Auston Matthews got real with the media explaining the reasons why the Leafs struggled.
The Toronto Maple Leafs had all the hype heading into the post-season, with a new-look team that is grittier and more physical, and all eyes were on how they would perform against their rivals the Boston Bruins in game 1. However, the game quickly got out of the Leafs' hands, and the Bruins won handily by a score of 5-1.
After the game, Auston Matthews talked with the media about what he thought went wrong, and how the Leafs are going to improve moving forward in the series.
"I mean, I can think of a couple things. Obviously, too many penalties. I think. you give a team like that many opportunities on the man advantage, they're going to capitalize. And, you know, I thought started out pretty good game, and then, you know, just little mistakes. They're a very patient team and they executed on the mistakes that we made. It's a game of inches.
You know, we get a taste of what the series is all about here in this game. And, you know, we just continue to elevate our game and continue, continue to put our best foot forward and get better.
He is right, the Leafs, though the scoreboard doesn't show it, played decent to start the game and on 5 on 5 throughout the entirety of the game. However, it was the penalties that got them down and their penalty kill that didn't help them when they needed it.
It is to be determined if the Leafs will bounce back from this loss, however, it is clear as day what they need to improve in order to have a chance in this series against the Bruins.
As seen on Auston Matthews reveals what caused the Leafs collapse in game 1
