Bowen Byram hasn't been a member of the Buffalo Sabres for long. However, it seems he was very close to a completely different location earlier this season.

A couple of days before the 2023-24 trade deadline of Mar. 8, the Colorado Avalanche acquired forward Casey Mittelstadt from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Byram. It was a one-for-one trade.

However, if we go back a couple of months before that, it seems Bowen Byram was very close to becoming a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.

ESPN's John Buccigross recently appeared on The Drop with Greg Wyshynski. He explained that Philadelphia Flyers GM Danny Briere is very high on Byram, and tried hard to acquire him as a return for Cutter Gautheir. Gautheir is a 5th overall pick of the Flyers who refused to sign with the team and was eventually traded the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Jamie Drysdale in what was a blockbuster move.

Buccigross did not say what else the return might include for Cutter Gauthier from the Colorado Avalanche. However, he said it was Gauthier himself who vetoed the trade as Colorado was not on his list of acceptable destinations.

Bowen Byram would have been an interesting pick up for Philadelphia. He's a former World Junior gold and silver medal winner, and got his name on the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022, which was just Byram's second season in the NHL. He played 30 games in the regular season that year, as well as another 20 in the playoffs. Bowen Byram has had battles with concussion symptoms in the past, but has not had any issues in that regard in 2023-24.

The Flyers did recently make another big move in the form of Russian military veteran Ilya Fedotov to make his NHL debut.
