According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the NHL and NHLPA are meeting on Thursday to discuss the 2021 Entry Draft, and see if it's feasible to move it back a year. Dreger added that many within the NHL are doubtful the draft will change from the weekend of July 23rd-24th.

Most, if not all NHL general managers are wanting the National Hockey League to push back it's 2021 Entry Draft by a year, and hold two drafts within the same week in June 2022. NHL scouts have had a tough time scouting 2021 eligible prospects due to some leagues not running, for example, the Ontario Hockey League. Every year the OHL produces a ton of players who get drafted, as was the case in 2020. 31 OHL players were selected in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, which is 14% of all players drafted that year.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also put a dent in scouts being able to physically watch players. With travel restrictions in place, and some leagues not allowing anyone in the arena except players, coaches, and essential staff, it makes it hard for teams to prepare their draft lists for a draft that is just over four months away.

If the NHL decides they're not going to move the draft, then they have to step up and host a showcase for these players to prove why they should be drafted. It would also give teams and their scouting staff an up-close look at a specific player, or players who they've been wanting to see.
