The NHL draws players from a relatively wide age range. However, their rules for entry-level players have proved to be too high a barrier of entry for one player close to signing with the Flames.

NHL Blocks Flames Signing Sam Morton

Earlier today, the Flames signed a free agent from Minnesota State to their team. This was set to be a one-year, two-way contract.

However, this entry-level contract was blocked by the NHL. Unfortunately for Morton and Calgary, the rules for North American players ELCs state that he must not be older than 24. The hopeful left-winger will be 26 in July, and will therefore have to hope for a new non-ELC contract.

"Sam Morton's #Flames 1 year entry-level contract (ELC) has been rejected by the NHL central registry - he is ineligible for an ELC since his entry-level age is 25 (greater than 24)

The #Flames will have to submit a new non-ELC contract"

This must be frustrating for all parties involved. With such a high level of competition among players much older than Morton, it may be time to revamp some rules about age-based contracts in the NHL.
