MAJOR: Tony DeAngelo Reportedly Getting Ditched By Another NHL Team

It appears it's the end of the line for Tony DeAngelo and another NHL team. This one is willing to make it as easy as possible for any team willing to take on the defenceman.

Hurricanes Desperate to Trade Defenceman DeAngelo

According to insider Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, not only do the Carolina Hurricanes want to rid themselves of DeAngelo, the team is willing to make it attractive for any team interested in having him.

"As teams continue to scour the market for right-shot defensemen, sounds like #Canes have set the ask at a 5th round pick for Tony DeAngelo and they will retain 50 percent to make it happen ($837,500).

It's been a tough year and they're willing to grant a change of scenery."

Hurricanes Want DeAngelo out of Carolina

While DeAngelo has been a controversial player since his entry into the NHL in 2016, this decision by general manager Don Waddell has nothing to do with what's happening in the locker room or off the ice. DeAngelo's play simply hasn't been strong enough to warrant a spot in the lineup. In 27 games in 2023-24, DeAngelo has 3 goals and 10 points, and is a minus-7. He has been a healthy scratch for several games throughout the year.

DeAngelo was signed by the Hurricanes after being bought out of his contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in July of 2023. He is the only player in NHL history to be bought out of two contracts. This season was his second stint with Carolina after being traded by the Hurricanes to the Flyers in July of 2022 for a fourth-round selection in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, a third-round pick in the 2023 draft, and a second-round pick in the 2024 draft. DeAngelo was previously bought out of his contract with the New York Rangers in 2021 after a reported skirmish between him and then Rangers goalie Alex Georgiev.
