Canucks Reportedly Attempting to Block Trade Involving Their Rival

The Calgary Flames are looking to shake things up before the looming NHL Trade Deadline on March 8th. One Flame player who will likely be traded before then is Top 4 defenseman & Alternate Captain, Chris Tanev.

The Canucks and Oilers are two teams who have expressed interest Flames defenseman, Chris Tanev. These two Pacific Division rivals are both near the top of their division although the Canucks have a healthy 15 point lead in the standings as of Monday.

The Flames are looking to get a first round pick in return for Tanev who will become a UFA at the end of this season. He has a $4.5 million cap hit now.

Per Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast:

"Vancouver I think it's very hard for them to do," admitted Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "But I think they like the idea of it and they would really prefer Edmonton not get him."

Chris Tanev and His NHL History with the Vancouver Canucks & Calgary Flames

Tanev is currently in his 14th NHL season. Unfortunately he has had trouble staying healthy during his long NHL tenure. He has only played a full 82 game season once in his career, that was during his 2021-2022 season with the Calgary Flames. Even with a questionable injury history he brings a veteran presence to any NHL locker room & logs significant ice time. This season he has averaged 19:44 on ice per game.

Should Patrik Allvin Bring Chris Tanev Back to Vancouver

He has a history in Vancouver & I am sure fans would love to see him back after spending 10 seasons there. The Canucks management has a strong desire to not let Tanev end up in Edmonton, who they could possibly meet in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But is it worth what the Canucks would have to give up for him?
