Penguins sign defenceman Yannick Weber

According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, the Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenceman Yannick Weber to a one-year contract worth $750,000. Weber originally re-joined the Nashville Predators on a PTO at the beginning of training camp, but he ultimately didn't sign, and remained an unrestricted free agent.

Weber will join the Penguins on Thursday, after he clears waivers. The signing comes as Pittsburgh's d-core continues to become more depleted by the day. Mike Matheson is currently on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, Juuso Riikola and Marcus Pettersson are both out 'longer-term' with upper-body injuries. Brian Dumoulin sustained an undisclosed injury in Tuesday night's overtime loss to Boston and was not at practice on Wednesday.

Weber, 32, was drafted in the third round, 73rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He's spent parts of 12 seasons in the NHL with Montreal, Vancouver, and Nashville.

In 497 regular season games, he's recorded 94 points (28 G, 63 A), 195 penalty minutes, and is a -25. In 42 career playoff games, Weber has 6 points (4 G, 2 A), 19 penalty minutes, and is a -4.

Internationally, Weber has represented Switzerland on multiple occasions, most recently at the 2019 IIHF World Hockey Championships. In 7 games, he had 1 point (1 A), 18 penalty minutes, and was a +4 as Switzerland finished 8th after losing to Canada in the quarterfinals.
