Patrick Roy Implements Controversial New Rule for His Players

Guess who's back in the NHL coaching scene? Yep, it's none other than Patrick Roy, and he's already making waves with the New York Islanders.

In his coaching debut with the Islanders, Roy faced a tough challenge as the Dallas Stars outshot them 43-28. Yet, thanks to the heroic goaltending of Ilya Sorokin, who made an astounding 41 saves, the Islanders pushed the game to overtime. The UBS arena erupted in cheers as Bo Horvat sealed the deal with a game-winning goal, clinching a thrilling 3-2 victory for the Islanders.

Since that electrifying debut, however, the Islanders have hit a rough patch, dropping three consecutive games, including a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers on Long Island Saturday night.

Yet Roy isn't one to sit back and watch his team struggle. He's already implementing changes, starting with practice. To foster accountability and unity, Roy has instituted a new rule: no more lingering on the ice for extra drills after practice. Now, everyone heads off together, reinforcing the team's sense of togetherness.

However, Roy's impact goes beyond practice sessions. His attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the game. During Saturday's morning skate, Roy didn't hesitate to halt line rushes if he wasn't satisfied with what he saw. He demanded perfection and wasn't afraid to make his expectations clear. Even the Islanders' top line faced his scrutiny, being stopped multiple times until they met Roy's standards.

And it's not just about the Xs and Os for Roy—it's about building a solid team culture. After each practice, the Islanders huddle at center ice, hands together, chanting in unison. It symbolizes their newfound unity and determination under Roy's leadership.

But not everyone is thrilled about the changes. Chicago Blackhawks rookie forward Connor Bedard, known for his dedication to solo practice sessions before and after practice, may find Roy's new rule challenging.

Will Roy's changes pay off for the Islanders? Only time will tell. Yet one thing's for sure: with Roy at the helm, the Islanders are aiming to strengthen their bond and climb their way back into playoff contention.
