The Toronto Maple Leafs have taken the first steps toward finalizing a roster for Wednesday's season opener against the Montreal Canadiens, announcing several roster cuts with a few notable names among them.
The Leafs have trimmed the roster down to 15 forwards, 8 defensemen and 3 goaltenders, meaning the additional players have either been assigned to the AHL Toronto Marlies or placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the same destination.
Per the team's official website, Kenny Agostino, Joey Anderson, Justin Brazeau, Rourke Chartier, Pierre Engvall, Tyler Gaudet, Mac Hollowell, Michael Hutchinson, Teemu Kivihalme, Timothy Liljegren, Martin Marincin, Nic Petan, Calle Rosen and Scott Sabourin are the players who have been cut from the Maple Leafs' NHL roster.
Some names worth mentioning who have made the first cut include the Leafs 2nd-round pick in 2019 F Nick Robertson, F Adam Brooks, F Travis Boyd, 2018 1st-round pick D Rasmus Sandin, G Aaron Dell and KHL standout D Mikko Lehtonen.
With a list possibly in excess of 100 players who will be placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL and taxi squads, the Leafs will have five names among them, with Kenny Agostino, Travis Boyd, Adam Brooks, Martin Marincin and Calle Rosen needing to clear waivers before they can join the Marlies/taxi squad.
