A mysterious situation is brewing in New Jersey over the Devils newly acquired goaltender Corey Crawford. Crawford is set to miss his fourth straight day of practice Thursday, and the team seems unwilling to say anything about what's going on.

"Everyone has questions about Corey Crawford," said The Athletic's Corey Masisak. "I, along with other writers from The Athletic, have reached out to people in various NHL circles seeking clarity on the situation. We're not going to speculate about what's going on without concrete information."

There are some speculating that Crawford, 36, may be set to announce his retirement after signing with the Devils as a free agent during the offseason, but there's been no confirmation of that.

"Devils coach Lindy Ruff says Corey Crawford was given a personal day. Did not want to expand on when he might me back. 'We'll deal with tomorrow then,'" said Masisak on Twitter Wednesday after Crawford had missed his third practice.

On January 3rd, the first day of practice he missed, TSN's Amanda Stein was told Crawford was taking a personal day.

If Crawford is out long-term, or actually considering retirement, it would come as a huge blow to New Jersey. The team is attempting to get things back on track after a dismal season in 2019-20. Crawford signed a two-year deal with the Devils worth $3.9 million per season (AAV) on October 9th.
