During a game between Djurgardens and HV71 in the SDHL (Swedish Women's Hockey League), HV71's team captain Sanni Hakala was tragically paralyzed from the waist-down.
Finnish women's national team player Sanni Hakala severely injured during a game in the Swedish women's league. She collided head-on with a post during the game. According to Jönköpings Posten, she has no feeling in her extremities from waist down.
Per the doctors on the ice, they tried to spark movement in her legs but she has no feeling:

New Statement From Hakala's Team Asking for Privacy
Her club, HV71 Women's, released this statement this morning:
Last Friday evening, HV71's team captain Sanni Hakala was injured in a situation where the HV forward collided with the goal cage and injured his neck. Sanni Hakala was taken to hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery on Saturday. Sanni Hakala was transferred from the Ryhov County Hospital to the University Hospital in Linköping on Friday evening and underwent surgery there on Saturday for the neck injuries she received after the accident. The surgeons at the hospital announce that the operation went well and that a long period of rehabilitation awaits Sanni, something that she now needs to focus on in peace and quiet. She has great support from her relatives and representatives from the club and is grateful for all the warmth she has received from the entire hockey family. More information will not be given at the moment and we ask everyone for consideration and respect for this.
