On Thursday, a 1979 Gretzky O-Pee-Chee Gem Mint rookie card sold for $1.29 million, according to Heritage Auctions. There are only a total of two specific 1979 Gretzky O-Pee-Chee cards to receive a Professional Sports Authenticator 10 gem mint status, meaning this card was extremely rare.
With the card being sold, it becomes the first in hockey history to surpass the $1 million mark. Not only is it the most expensive hockey card of all time, but the sixth most expensive card in sports history, trailing only a 2009 Mike Trout ($3.9), a 1909 Honus Wagner ($3.3), a 1952 Mickey Mantle ($2.9), a 2013-14 Giannis Antetokounmpo ($1.9) and a 2003-04 Lebron James ($1.8), according to Groove Wallet.
It makes perfect sense that Gretzky would have the world's most expensive hockey card, given that the now 59-year-old holds almost all NHL scoring records, including all time goals (894), assists (1963), and of course points (2857). On top of those absurd numbers, he also possesses 10 Art Ross Trophies, nine Hart Trophies, four Stanley Cups, and many many more personal accolades.
