The Edmonton Oilers 2023 season hasn't started the way anyone quite expected, with a 1-4-1 mark through their first six games, and now they've got a big week ahead of them.

A massive decision to make

According to veteran Connor Brown's contract, he carries a cap hit of $775k, but if he plays in 10 games with the team this year, it comes with a performance bonus of $3.25 million that would count towards the salary cap next season.

something to keep an eye on - Connor Brown has 0 points in 6 games for the Oilers. they've been outscored 3-0 with him on the ice at 5v5 and now he's on the third line.

his cap hit is $775k, but if he plays 10 games he has a $3.25M performance bonus that's on the cap next year

Unfortunately for Brown, he has zero points in his six games played this season, and unless he can turn it around and put up a big performance soon, it's very likely that the team will move on from him and he won't hit the 10-game mark.

A big week ahead

On top of this, the Oilers have a tough matchup against New York, as well as the Heritage Classic against the rival Flames, all without Connor McDavid, and while the season is still young, the warning signs are there for Edmonton.

Ultimately, Brown was brought in to be a potential top-six forward with this stacked group, but so far, he's been a major disappointment, and with other players performing at a much higher level, Brown needs to excel over the next few games if he wants to save his NHL career in Edmonton.
