The Calgary Flames had a lot of turnover this summer. A new General Manager and Head Coach were both hired. With this in mind the captaincy is still open in Calgary. Many expected longtime Flame Mikael Backlund to become captain. For now though he is not under contract so a new frontrunner has emerged.

Sportsnet's Eric Francis expects Rasmus Andersson will be the next captain of the Calgary Flames.

Andersson has been with the Calgary Flames on a full-time basis since 2018-19. Over the last two seasons, Andersson has broken out having 50 and 49 points. He is also considered to be a great locker room presence and loves being a part of the organization.

Asked Rasmus Andersson this afternoon what he wants the culture of this new era of #Flames hockey to be:

«Be proud to wear the Calgary Flames [logo]. Be proud to play in a great organization and a great city. Be a hard-working team who plays fun hockey and works for each other.»

Andersson's quote sounds like absolute captain material. He is proud to play in Calgary and wants the team to work together and motivate one another.

Flames Looking To Bounce Back

The Calgary Flames are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2022-23 season. The Flames missed the playoffs and their two new additions Mackenzie Weegar and Jonathan Huberdeau both underperformed. Now the team will look to have a more productive year this upcoming season.

With players like Matthew Coronato and Jakob Pelletier getting a taste of the NHL last season there could be a youth movement in Calgary. Former head coach Darryl Sutter wanted a more veteran team and was not afraid to show it.

Heading into the 2023-24 season it will be intriguing to see if Rasmus Andersson can lead the new look Flames back to success.
