At first glance,
Connor McDavid seems a season away from this major milestone. Though looking at his past performances, he has a shot at it this year.
1000 Point Club
McDavid is currently sitting at 850 points. For an above-average NHL player, that's still at least 1 season away from reaching the 1000-point club. However, McDavid is no average NHLer. 150 points is a remarkable season, only done by 6 players in NHL history. McDavid is one of them—last season.
McDavid needs 150 to hit 1000 and I think that's more likely than Wheeler getting 78
Among the Greats
McDavid, if he is able to do it next season, will reach the milestone in incredibly fast fashion, under 650 games. The only players to reach 100 points that quickly are Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky.
If he doesn't hit it, McDavid will still be considered one of the best NHL players of all time, and he still has a number of seasons left to play in his career. But if he can repeat his success last season, he will cement his face on the mount rushmore of NHL greats.
Assuming McDavid regresses terribly into a point-per-game player, he would still accomplish the feat in 719 games, he would still be the 6th fastest to ever do it ahead of players like Guy Lafleur and the fastest active player to do it,
Sidney Crosby.
