As most people know who pay attention to hockey Sidney Crosby is attached to the number 87. Not only is it his jersey number but he revolves his life around it in many ways.
Crosby who was born in 1987 sees the number as a source of luck. So much so that he has worked the number into each one of his contracts. Now with Crosby's contract about to be up after the 2024-25 season Crosby may be able to give the Penguins an unfair advantage.
Sidney Crosby is currently under contract with the Penguins until 2025 with an annual cap hit of $8,700,000 once again involving the number 87. At the time this contract was signed in 2013, it was considered a discount but still made Crosby one of the highest-paid players in the NHL.
Fast forward to 2025, if Crosby is still committed to the number 87 the Penguins have a chance to get Crosby back on another 8.7 million dollar deal. This would be highway robbery for a player of Crosby's talents by then.
Players like Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid are making upwards of 12 to 13 million dollars a season. This would give the Penguins around 4 to 5 million in extra cap space to surround Crosby with talent.
If the Penguins are able to bring back Crosby even at his older age back at 8.7 million it will be a big favor to the organization from Crosby. One that could lead to another banner raising in Pittsburgh someday.
