It's been a little while since the Alex Galchenyuk fallout, and it looks like he already has suitors ready to sign him in Russia. The former 3rd overall pick was arrested in Scottsdale recently and had his contract with Arizona terminated.

Interest From the KHL

Rinat Bashirov, the General Manager of the KHL Club Salvat Yulaev, spoke with the media recently, where he discussed his interest in bringing in the now free-agent, Alex Galchenyuk. The Russian/American dual national has heavy ties to Russia, but has never actually played there throughout his junior and professional career,

Bashirov had the following to say.

PUBLICITÉS

"We informed the agent of our interest. But for now, no more. While he is doing his own thing, we do not know how events will develop. We sort of hung up the call, it will be - we will consider it. There is a budget for this. It is unclear what condition he is in.

It is difficult to judge a person, or a situation, without knowing it completely. Everything can be there. The interpretation of the same police officers may also be different. While it is difficult to judge. Let's see how the person will be ready." - Rinat Bashirov

While we assumed that Galchenyuk would have plenty of suitors in Russia, we didn't expect a General Manager to come out and state their interest as Bashirov did.

Return to the NHL

While a return to the NHL anytime soon seems unlikely, Galchenyuk has stated his interest in working with the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. While he could be doing this solely to better himself, we don't know why he would seek help specifically with an NHL-associated group unless he wanted to return to the NHL.

Galchenyuk is still a good hockey player but has some serious work to do before he is worthy of another shot in professional hockey. We don't doubt that he could make that return someday, but a lot of work has to be done before he gets there.
