It turns out the Hurricanes' ownership likely had a role in the DeAngelo trade falling through, per a new report.
While we can't confirm 100% that Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon was the reason for the trade not being completed, it would make sense that a decision like this would have to go through the owner. The Canes had traded DeAngelo just a year prior, and perhaps Dundon knew something we didn't about him.
While it would be unlikely that Carolina would bring DeAngelo back after the news that Dudon vetoed the trade, they now have the chance to sign him for basically free. DeAngelo is once again a free agent and could return to Carolina in a similar fashion to two years ago.
Maybe if Carolina's trade talks with San Jose regarding Erik Karlsson fall through, they circle back to DeAngelo about a contract.
While we wouldn't say the door is closed, it's certainly not wide open.
