Washington Capitals interested in hiring Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach

Rumors had circulated earlier this year that the Washington Capitals were considering a contract extension for head coach Peter Laviolette, while the team was in a playoff spot with potential to compete for the Stanley Cup. However, the Capitals have since fallen out of playoff contention and are currently 6 points away from a playoff spot, causing the extension rumors to fade away.

Now, a new rumor has emerged that the Capitals are eyeing a member of the coaching staff from the Toronto Maple Leafs, as reported by ESPN's Emily Kaplan. Spencer Carbery, who has previously interviewed for head coaching positions with other teams, including the San Jose Sharks, has spent time with the Capitals' AHL affiliate and would be a welcomed addition back to the organization.

The 41-year-old is one of the buzziest names on the coaching circuit — and that's even before he landed in Toronto, center of the hockey media universe. A few respondents said to monitor Carbery as an option for the Capitals should they make a change. Carbery is thought highly of in the Caps organization after three years leading its top minor league affiliate, the Hershey Bears. He has been a quick riser after winning ECHL Coach of the Year (2014) and AHL Coach of the Year (2021). Washington wanted to keep him on, but Carbery took an assistant job with the Maple Leafs in 2021. Since Carbery took over running the power play, Toronto has the league's second-best man-up unit (behind Edmonton).

As the summer approaches, many teams, including the Maple Leafs, will be facing an interesting offseason. If the Leafs fail to advance past the first round of the playoffs again, there may be uncertainty surrounding the future of their head coach, Sheldon Keefe.
