While hockey fans are eagerly following Connor McDavid's pursuit of seventy goals, it seems that the 2022-2023 season is shaping up to be the year of the goalie goal.
The most recent example occurred during an East Coast Hockey League game between the Fort Wayne Komets and Rapid City Rush at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
-
Late in the third period with the Komets leading 5-3, Rapid City pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. The Rush then sent the puck deep into the Komets' zone, where goaltender Ryan Fanti retrieved it behind his net and promptly wristed it the length of the ice, scoring a goal at 1:42 of the final frame.
Fanti and his teammates celebrated on the ice before the goaltender skated to his bench, high-fiving his fellow players. As his name was announced by the public address announcer, he pumped both his arms in excitement
This historic goal was the first scored by a goalie in Fort Wayne's seventy-one-year history and certainly secured Fanti's legendary status. Before joining the professional ranks, the twenty-three-year-old Thunder Bay, ON native played for two years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he went 32-19-6 in fifty-seven games played.
