Brassard calls on Ottawa's GM to add a player at deadline; says team has earned it

With the NHL trade deadline coming up at the end of this week, it's still anyone's guess what, if anything, the Ottawa Senators will try to pull off. The team is six points out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, and there are several teams in the mix. Sens GM Pierre Dorion may choose to stand pat when it comes to adding big name (and most like rental) players at the deadline, instead choosing to make the team better in the future instead of right now. As for veteran Derick Brassard, he believes he and his teammates deserve to have Dorion get some immediate help for the team.

"I honestly think we have earned the right, maybe, for Pierre to add a player at the deadline," said Brassard. "I think, this group, we're trying to get to the next step. Our progress all year long, we had some tough moments, but our play the last two months, I think our play is well deserved for that."

"I feel like this group, we're going to go all the way to the end. We're right there, it's only five points," added Brassard (it's actually six at the time of this writing).

One major questions mark for Dorion going into the deadline is goaltending. Cam Talbot, picked up from Minnesota during the last off season, has already indicated he's not interested in signing a new deal to stay with the Senators. Talbot will garner plenty of interest over the next few days, but not getting a goaltender in return would leave Ottawa with very little experience in the crease. Anton Forsberg, who is 30, just recently hit the 130 game mark in the NHL. Mads Sogaard, who is 22, has played 7 NHL games.
