CHL announces independent review panel after numerous hazing incidents come to light

The Canadian Hockey League announced Friday that they have come up with an Independent Review Panel to review the current policies and practices in the league in regards to hazing, abuse, harassment and bullying, as well as the allegation players do not feel comfortable reporting such behaviours.

The panel will be chaired by former Premier of New Brunswick Camille Theriault, and will include former NHLer Sheldon Kennedy and Canadian Olympic hockey player Danièle Sauvageau.

“The CHL is committed to the 1,400 young men who play in our league and the protection of our players has been and always will be our primary concern,” said CHL president Dan MacKenzie. “This is why we have assembled this Independent Review Panel to review the effectiveness of our current policies, player experience programs and procedures for reporting off-ice misconduct, to help ensure that we are providing the safest environment free of hazing, abuse, harassment and bullying.”

This comes after many recent hazing allegations have come out, from former NHL player such as Daniel Carcillo and Dan Fritsche, along with many others whose names aren't as well known. Just over a month ago, Carcillo and Garrett Taylor, another former player, filed a lawsuit against the CHL claiming they knew about these hazing rituals but never did anything about them. The hope with all of this is that hockey culture can be changed and more welcoming to anyone and everyone who wants to play the game.
