Jonathan Drouin's strong play of late could see him dealt by March 3rd
The Montreal Canadiens have plenty of decisions to make before the National Hockey League's trade deadline on Friday, March 3rd. Among the names that have drawn interest from teams around the league are Joel Edmundson and Sean Monahan, both of whom are currently injured. But one name to keep an eye on is pending unrestricted free agent forward Jonathan Drouin.
In his last twelve games, Drouin has 12 assists, including nine in his last six games and three on Tuesday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. With his trio of assists last night, Drouin broke the NHL record for most points without a goal. In 31 games, the 27-year-old has 17 assists.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Drouin's strong play of late could make him an option for teams ahead of the deadline, if the Canadiens are willing to retain half of his salary.
One team that would be interesting to watch on the Jonathan Drouin front would be the Colorado Avalanche. There's no question that the Avalanche would like to add to their forward group ahead of a run at back-to-back Stanley Cups.
The Canadiens and Avalanche came together at last year's deadline to make a move, as Artturi Lehkonen was traded to Colorado for Justin Barron and a 2024 second-round pick. Another reason why the Avalanche could be a fit for Drouin is his past chemistry with Nathan MacKinnon, as they both played on the same line together with Halifax in the QMJHL from 2011 to 2013.
