According to an official statement from the organization, the league has administered more than 2600 tests to over 800 players, with only two showing positive results for COVID-19.
Due to the NHL's mandate to not identify the players or teams who have personnel who have tested positive for the virus, no further information is available on these players, but they are likely among those who have been deemed "unfit to play". What we do know is that, according to the League's statement, both players who have tested positive are in self-isolation and are following CDC and Health Canada protocols.
The NHL has also committed to providing regular updates on testing and results as Phase 3 progresses.
It's pretty remarkable that the NHL and NHLPA have been able to execute their Return to Play initiative with so few positive results coming in. It is a testament to the rigorous planning and coordination that has occurred prior to the actual implementation. It's even more impressive, considering the fact that there are a lot of moving parts in play. Kudos on all involved in bringing hockey back during such a challenging time and doing an excellent job of keeping everyone safe.
