Calgary Flames forward Sean Monahan, who spoke with reporters on Wednesday afternoon, said he is hoping this year's postseason goes much better for him and his teammates than it did last year.

“We got embarrassed last year in the postseason,” Monahan said, according to Sportsnet reporter Eric Francis. “As a player representing an organization, that sticks with you. We've got a lot to prove here and we have a lot of things motivating us.”

It certainly was a tough 2019 postseason for the Flames, who finished the season first place in the Western Conference but were eliminated by the Colorado Avalanche just five games into the first round. Monahan, 25, had set a career high that season with 82 points in 78 games, but was only able to produce two points in five playoff games.

“We've talked about it a lot – and a lot behind closed doors – we got outworked and outcompeted and got owned by Colorado,” he said. “You want to be a guy who can be a part of the postseason and that's where a lot of guys' legacies are built. That's the kind of guys we want to be, and we want to step up and take charge in Game 1.”

On a personal level, Monahan will certainly be looking to bounce back as he had a poor 2019-20 season by his standards. The seven-year veteran managed just 22 goals and 48 points, his lowest totals in both since his rookie season. He and his teammates will take on the Winnipeg Jets in the best-of-five play-in round which is set to begin in early August.
