The Winnipeg native was drafted by the New York Rangers in the 5th round of the 2003 draft. After scoring 84 points in 212 games, he left to play for Barys Astana in Kazakhstan during the 2011 season. In the most recent two seasons, Dawes has been Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg's leading goal scorer, scoring 119 points in 119 games.
Because of that, it was interesting news when rumours saying the 35-year-old wouldn't be playing for Bill Peters emerged. According to Brian McGonagle, who is a co-host with Spittin Chiclets, Nigel Dawes, who is Canadian, but has citizenship in Kazakhstan and is of Jamaican decent, allegedly made his decision as soon as the signing of Bill Peters was announced.
Bill Peters was forced to resign as head coach of the Calgary Flames after accusations of racism from Akim Aliu. Michal Jordan also accused Peters of physical abuse while he was a member of the Calgary Flames.
Ultimately, it appears it were those incidents which led to Nigel Dawes signing with Ak Bars Kazan, and now Bill Peters will have to find a way without the team's leading goal scorer.
