Andreas Athanasiou Roasts Jacob Trouba After Huge Hit Saturday Night

When asked about Jacob Trouba's monstrous hit on Saturday night, Andreas Athanasiou didn't hold back when talking about the New York Rangers' captain.

Athanasiou basically said that Trouba is overpaid, and the only way he can live up to his $8 million contract is to hurt other players. He said Trouba has a history of hitting people up high - which, let's face it, he does - and that he deliberately tries to hurt people.

Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun Times was able to talk with him and got some intriguing quotes.

"That guy is known for hitting high, not really worrying about the puck out there and almost trying to hurt people," Athanasiou said. "That's his game; that's what he does. He's an $8 million man with zero goals, so he has to figure out how to do something when making that much. If you can't help the team, I guess you try to hurt guys on the other team."

Trouba received no penalty for his hit on Athanasiou, and rightfully so; it was a clean hit. That doesn't make it not predatory, and that is what upset the Blackhawks forward the most.

"It was a weird play. The puck was there. He could've made a play on the puck. Instead it's like [he had] an intent to try to hurt somebody. He's been known to do that. You have to know when he's on the ice, and he got me there."

Trouba infamously laid big hits on Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Jujhar Khaira, and Seth Jarvis last season, leaving the latter two concussed. Teams around the NHL have most definitely taken notice of Jacob Trouba, and they almost certainly have someone on the bench announcing when he is on the ice.

At least, that's what a smart hockey club would do. Trouba's play has garnered criticism, whether it's all just isn't for me to say. But the fact is, teams cannot risk their players being unaware of #8's presence on the ice.
