Canadiens reportedly considering a contract extension for Sean Monahan

Thursday was a big day for Montreal Canadiens forward Sean Monahan. For the first time since being traded to Montreal, Monahan returned to Calgary, where he spent the first nine seasons of his NHL career.

Monahan is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2022-23 season and with the Canadiens expected to miss the playoffs, moving him to acquire assets would make the most sense. But according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the Canadiens are considering a potential contract extension for the Brampton (Ontario) native.

"Let's remember the reason the Montreal Canadiens made that trade in August was that a first-round pick was attached to acquiring Sean Monahan from the Calgary Flames. That's what the Habs are about right now. And it sort of felt like it was almost a foregone conclusion that the Canadiens would turn around and flip Monahan before the March 3 trade deadline and get another asset in all of this." LeBrun said.

He added, "But, here's the interesting thing. Monahan has played well. He's fit well on and off the ice. The Habs have been impressed with him and what's happening right now is Canadiens' management are having the discussion of should we actually keep this guy? Could he be part of our plans moving forward? I still think it's more likely they move him, but the mere fact they're having that discussion is an interesting development.

The 28-year-old is having a solid start to his tenure with the Canadiens. Going into Thursday's game, he's recorded 14 points (five goals, nine assists), 16 penalty minutes and is a minus-six.
