The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed Morgan Reilly on long-term injured reserve after his injuries sustained on Monday night. Reilly joins
Jake Muzzin on the LTIR list, and
T.J. Brodie has also been sidelined, leaving the Leafs without their three highest paid defensemen.
This spells big trouble for a Maple Leafs group in need of their best players. 10-5-5, Toronto is hanging on by a thread, and there is little GM Kyle Dubas can do given his salary cap situation. Reilly's relegation to LTIR gives Dubas a little breathing space to strike a deal, but exactly how much?
Between Reilly and Muzzin, Dubas gains ~$13 million in savings - for now. Muzzin's season is likely over, but Reilly will likely be back at some point. Can the Leafs' front office strike a deal to fill their gaps on defense? Or is Toronto's situation too dire to be fixed in the remaining time?
