Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Chris Archer underwent surgery Tuesday to relieve symptoms related to thoracic outlet syndrome, the Pirates announced on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old Archer will not pitch in 2020, but the club expects him to fully recover in time for the full 2021 season.

A two-time All-Star with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 and 2017, Archer is coming off his worst season in the majors, where he went 3-9 with a 5.19 ERA over 23 starts.

Many pitchers, including Matt Harvey and Phil Hughes (twice), have undergone surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in recent years.
