On Wednesday, the Western Hockey League announced that Ty Smith, of the Spokane Chiefs, won the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy for the second consecutive year. This award is granted to the best defensemen in the WHL.

Smith is only the third player to win this award in back-to-back seasons. He now joins the ranks of Kris Russell and Dion Phaneuf.

In the 2019-20 season, Smith recorded 59 points in just 46 games with the Chiefs. He also helped Team Canada win gold at the World juniors in the Czech Republic.

Smith is now one of three finalists eligible to win the Canadian Hockey League's Defenseman of the Year award.
