If the 2020 Major League Baseball season does eventually get underway, player safety will have to be a chief concern.

Tommy John surgery specialist Dr. James Andrews is cautioning teams against rushing players, especially pitchers, to game action due to the extremely high potential for injury.

Dr. Andrews added that the beginning of the baseball season is typically when most injuries occur in baseball. With the extended layoff and a potentially compacted schedule, he believes that teams and players will have to be extra cautious to avoid big injuries.

He has became known as the go–to doctor for any ligament injuries in sports. From Tommy John procedures on John Smoltz, Kenny Rogers as well as Kerry Wood, to knee surgeries on the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Peyton Manning and Hulk Hogan.

"We're going to have to really consider that and come together with the team doctors from different teams to make recommendations on how to handle that."
