Mathieu Perreault is Retiring from the NHL in Unofficial Release

According to TVA Sports, Mathieu Perreault is retiring from the NHL after 13 seasons.

Aside from this statement, there has been no other announcement made by Perreault or his camp regarding the decision, hence the 'unofficial' in the title. A native of Drummondville, Quebec, he ended his career with his hometown squad if he is indeed calling it a career.

Perreault skated in 708 NHL games, totaling 353 points, including 51 playoff matches. Coined as the archetypical 'plug & play' type of player, Perreault's career is defined by his adaptivity and ability to play anywhere in the lineup and yield results. Even in his older seasons, he drove play at a high level, managing to break 30 or more points in 7 of his 13 seasons. The 34-year old still has good hockey in him, but after scoring just 9 points in 25 games last season, he clearly feels as though the time has come.

A solid career comes to an end, and as mentioned Perreault was still playing decent hockey for Montreal in his final season. In a reduced role with poor teammates, the Quebecois yielded a positive on-ice impact, hardly took penalties, and still produced at an above-average rate at 5v5. He is walking away from the game on his own terms, which is really all any athlete can ask.

Per TVA, Perreault will become TV analyst for the network, shifting his career to media rather than playing. Best of luck to Mathieu, and what a career he had.
