As of the first of May, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred will suspend Uniform Employee Contracts so that clubs will be able to furlough its team employees or reduce their pay, sources have told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic on Sunday.

Teams will be informed on Monday of what measures are being taken to help deal with any financial shortfalls related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Any decisions related to the potential furloughs will all be up to team discretion, and these actions will be optional. As of Sunday, the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants have all agreed to pay staff through the end of May.

The suspension of the Uniform Employee Contracts will not impact player salaries. Instead, these actions could affect managers at both the major league and minor league levels, some front office staff, and scouts.

All 30 teams had committed to paying team employees through April 30 after each club pledged $1 million in March.

It was last week when commissioner Manfred announced that he and other senior MLB staffers would be taking pay cuts for the 2020 season.
