Zdeno Chara's Career Has Reportedly Come to a Conclusion, Retirement Inbound

According to Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, the general sense around the league is that Zdeno Chara has played his last NHL game. Chara's longevity is quite impressive, but let's face facts; he was a liability for most of the season for the New York Islanders, and he is clearly unable to maintain pace any longer.

"The guessing around the NHL is that Zdeno Chara has played his last game. For those counting, that's 1,880 regular season and playoff games. A lifetime — and then some — for the future Hall of Famer."

Simmons is not the most credible source in the world, but I tend to side with the controversial writer on this one.

Chara has led an incredible career, he is a lock for the Hockey Hall of Fame, and his time in the spotlight is just about done. I would bet that he signs a ceremonial one-day contract with Boston, so he can retire a Bruin. Just a hunch, not an inside scoop.

While Chara seriously struggled last season, his performance was really not too shabby for a guy aged nearly half a century. Nevertheless, the general vibe around the NHL, per Simmons, is that he is done playing. Going strong in the NHL until 45 is pretty incredible, only Chara and Jagr have done it in recent memory. Stick taps on an incredible career, Big Z.
