On Friday, Ottawa Senators General Manager Pierre Dorion appeared on TSN1200 radio to discuss a wide range of topics with the 2022-23 season just over six weeks away.

The Senators GM had a busy off-season, acquiring Alex DeBrincat and Cam Talbot, while signing Claude Giroux to a three-year deal on the opening day of free agency.

Dorion said that he is happy for the fanbase and seeing how engaged they are with the team. He added that deserve this after suffering for the last few years.

With training camps to open in less than four weeks, Dorion said that Head Coach D.J. Smith would like to have his final roster ready with two or three pre-season games remaining. He also mentioned that they have sent out PTO offers to a few players and if they accept, they'll have a strong chance of making the team out of camp.

There's no doubt the Senators have a ton of talent on forward with Tim Stutzle, Brady Tkachuk, Josh Norris, Alex DeBrincat and Claude Giroux, among others, but when looking at the blue line, there are several question marks.

Thomas Chabot will lead the way once again, with veteran Travis Hamonic. Russian defencemen Nikita Zaitsev and Artyom Zub will likely for sure be on the opening night roster, but beyond those four, it's pretty wide open, and Dorion acknowledged that during his interview.

Dorion said, "On the back end, if you are good you are playing. Its wide open."

The 50-year-old added that the team is still on the lookout a top-four defenceman, "We feel very comfortable with the team we have now but if we can add a top 4 D, we would do that. Other teams see me coming from a mile away now though."

Overall, Dorion is excited about the direction the Ottawa Senators are heading in. It's too early to tell if they'll be a playoff team this season, despite making some big moves, but they should be in it right until Game 82 in April.

The Senators will open their pre-season schedule on September 24th with a split-squad double-header in Toronto against the Maple Leafs. They'll then open the 2022-23 season on October 13th in Buffalo.
