Whenever baseball does resume from its ongoing pause to help stop the spread of COVID-19, umpires will have the ability to communicate the outcomes of replays and big calls directly to fans in the stadium and those watching at home, following in the footsteps of the NFL and NHL.

“You're gonna have that,” retired MLB umpire Dale Scott said during the Sportsnet's Toronto Blue Jays Watch Party on Friday night. “ With the new contract the umpires had this year, the crew chiefs will be explaining all replays.

“It's happening. The only reason we haven't done it yet is because of this virus.”

Scott also added that in conversations he's had with a current MLB crew chief, Dan Iassogna, umpires were being taught how to use the microphone to address the in-stadium crowd and television audience.

“Once we finally get some baseball back, you're going to be hearing the crew chiefs explaining plays,” Scott said.

The MLB season was set to start March 26 but spring training was halted on March 12. Once the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a recommendation for restricting events of more than 50 people for eight weeks, the MLB said that it would not open until mid-May at the earliest.
