John Klingberg almost became involved in a sign-and-trade between two Canadian franchises
Anaheim Ducks defenceman John Klingberg was one of the big names among blueliners during this summer's free agency period. It was widely expected that he was going to sign a long-term deal on a higher AAV, but instead he opted to sign a one-year, $7 million deal with the Anaheim Ducks.
During this week's 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman mentioned that Klingberg almost became involved in sign-and-trade between the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers.
"Before he ended up in Anaheim, I do think they (Edmonton Oilers) were looking at Klingberg and they were trying to do something with another team, potentially Montreal." Friedman said.
He added, "Klingberg would sign there (Montreal) and then get traded to Edmonton. Montreal would have retained a bit and the Oilers would have added a sweetener and maybe they'd have to move a player or two. I do think that was talked about."

It's unclear who Montreal would have acquired in the potential trade, but Friedman mentioned the possibilty of one of the assets being then-RFA forward Jesse Puljujarvi, who the Canadiens have shown interest in previously.
Klingberg, 30, has been one of the best defenceman in terms of point production since entering the NHL during the 2014-15 season. In 552 career games, all with Dallas, the Gothenburg (Sweden) native has 374 points (71 goals, 303 assists).
