Dmitrij Jaskin named captain of KHL club at a controversial time
Earlier this summer, former St. Louis Blues' second round pick Dmitrij Jaskin left the National Hockey League for a second time and signed with SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL. Over the weekend, the Russian-based team named him captain for the upcoming season, which caused some controversy.
The news of Jaskin being named captain comes at a controversial time. At the international level, Jaskin represents Czechia and the day he was named captain also marked the anniversary of the Warsaw Pact troops, led by the Soviet Union, invading Czechoslovakia. News outlets and hockey fans in Czechia were not happy with the news of Jaskin being named captain and it'll be hard to picture him being selected to play for the national team again.
Jaskin, 29, has appeared in 315 regular season games in the NHL for St. Louis, Washington and Arizona across parts of eight seasons. In those 315 games, Jaskin has 70 points (27 goals, 43 assists), 92 penalty minutes and is a plus-six.
After the 2018-19 season, Jaskin headed to Russia and signed a contract with Dynamo Moscow. He spent two seasons with Dynamo Moscow before returning to the NHL last summer, signing a one-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes. His time with the Yotes didn't go as expected, only appearing in twelve games before a lower-body injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
