The New York Islanders were struggling mightily prior to the NHL pause, as they had gone just 2-4-4 over their last 10 games before the NHL was suspended. The pause has had given head coach Barry Trotz some time to self-reflect.

Twenty-twenty hindsight is always a great thing, but I would do a few things different,” he said. “Maybe practiced, at different times, more, just because the group needed it."

“Sometimes, I felt like we overcoached,” Trotz went on to say. “That's because we're so passionate about getting better. When I say you overcoach, you get away from what you do really well.”

It has been a tough second half of the season for the Islanders. They started the season incredibly, and even set a franchise record with 17 straight games without a regulation loss. Not long after, they began to cool down, and currently find themselves sitting one point behind the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Carolina Hurricanes for the final playoff spot.

Trotz doesn't appear to be panicking however, as he believes his team will make the playoffs if the season is able to continue.

“I wasn't worried we weren't going to make playoffs because we were trending, mentally, in the right way,” he said. “Our mental mindset was going in the right direction.”

This is Trotz's second season as the head coach for the Islanders. He played a major role in a very unexpected playoff berth, as well as a first round series sweep over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Prior to joining the Islanders, he was the head coach for the Washington Capitals, and won a Stanley Cup with them during the 2017-18 season.
