Through an interview in Slovak newspaper SME, defenceman Andrej Sekera has announced his retirement following sixteen seasons in the National Hockey League.

"My hockey career is over," Sekera said. "I've had some offers as a free agent, but still I decided to quit. A big reason was my son had had some medical issues during the last year. After everything we went through, I realized the best would be if I devoted more time to my family. I thought maybe it would turn around somehow, but that did not happen."

Sekera, 36, appeared in 842 regular season games during his career with the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars. In those 842 games, he put up 253 points (51 goals, 202 assists). Sekera went on to add five points in 46 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 2020, he helped the Dallas Stars reach their first Stanley Cup Final since 2000.

Internationally, Sekera has represented Slovakia on several occasions including eight World Championships and two Winter Olympics. At the 2012 World Championship, he helped Slovakia bring home a silver medal. The Bojnice native was named as one of the first three players to represent Slovakia at the 2022 Winter Olympics, but due to COVID-19, the NHL opted not to go.

Congratulations to Andrej Sekera on a solid career and all the best in retirement.
