Owners of Washington Capitals & Wizards to extend pay for part-time employees

As speculation continues around when professional sports might resume play, arenas, teams and athletes around both the NHL and NBA have all stepped in, offering aid to employees who find themselves out of work amidst the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak.

As of Thursday, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the company that owns the NHL's Washington Capitals and the NBA's Wizards, have announced their plan to continue to pay part-time MSE employees for suspended games through April.

Ted Leonsis, the chairman of MSE, told employees Thursday, that beyond paying part-time staff for postponed games and events in March, they are expanding that commitment through April.

The company has also told full-time employees to prepare to play the remainder of the NBA and NHL 2019-20 seasons.

Monica Dixon, MSE chief administrative officer and president of external affairs, addressed the decision;

Our ownership group and leadership team are in total agreement that this is the right thing to do.

Every league and every team has its own set of individual circumstances, and must act accordingly. For Monumental Sports & Entertainment, we are operating simply in a paused state of play for our regular season and playoffs, and we intend to come back as a fully functioning organization to complete this season.

In total, Monumental Sports & Entertainment is expected to pay out salaries to the tune of $1.2 million to employees who's jobs were effected by the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

At this time, all events scheduled for the Capitals and Wizards at Capital One Arena are still postponed until further notice.
