With a week remaining until the NHL Entry Draft, two teams have filled their head coaching vacancies. Earlier today the Detroit Red Wings named Tampa Bay Lightning Assistant Coach Derek Lalonde as their Head Coach. Now the Boston Bruins have reportedly tapped Jim Montgomery as theirs. Matt Murley of Spittin' Chiclets was the first with the scoop:

This was Matt's first official 'scoop' of his insider career, so congratulations to him. Montgomery took the long road back into the NHL after being dismissed by the Dallas Stars, citing inappropriate conduct in 2019. Many believed after the fact that he would return to the NHL eventually, it was simply a matter of when & where.

Montgomery replaces Bruce Cassidy, who was recently hired by the Vegas Golden Knights. Montgomery holds an NHL record of 60-43-10 in 113 matches as HC for the Dallas Stars. He spent the last two seasons as an Assistant with the St. Louis Blues. Montgomery does have a pedigree of winning championships, having won two in the USHL with the Dubuque Fighting Saints & one National Championship with the University of Denver Pioneers. The expectation in Boston is likely to win & win now, so there is a bit of pressure out of the gate for Montgomery.
