Per Katie Strang of The Athletic, Canadian Tire Corporation also withdrew sponsorship for Hockey Canada this afternoon. Canadian Tire is Canada's 58th largest company by market cap, and in addition to pulling funding from Hockey Canada, Canadian Tire is also "re-evaluating its relationship with Hockey Canada."
The dominos have begun to drop in short order, as Telus Communications has redirected all of its funding of Canada's World Junior program to 'Canadian organizations that support women affected by sexual violence,' according to a company release. They also pledged to continue their funding of women's & youth initiatives. Talk about a modern solution to a modern problem.
We can realistically expect more stories like this to reach the public in the coming weeks. The World Junior Championship is scheduled to begin Tuesday August 9, so there is a lot of time for more information to be processed & released before opening ceremonies. In the meantime as well, the Canadian government has made it a top priority to drop the hammer on Hockey Canada for these indiscretions, as they were the first to freeze funding just a short week ago. The next 6-12 months will be rife with bad press for Hockey Canada, and one can only hope positive long-term change will follow.
