The Edmonton Oilers are heading into the off-season with a bit of uncertainty in goal with Mikko Koskinen likely returning to Europe and Mike Smith not sure if he'll play next season, despite being under contract for the 2022-23 campaign.

On the blue line, their isn't a definitive answer on whether or not Oscar Klefbom will resume his NHL career next year after missing the entire 2021-22 season with a chronic shoulder injury. Another name their awaiting a decision from is veteran defenceman Duncan Keith, who has one-year remaining on his contract at a cap hit of $5,538,462.

During Saturday's brief '32 Thoughts' segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the Edmonton Oilers would like some clarity on Mike Smith and Duncan Keith's plans for the 2022-23 season around July 1st, six days before the draft and twelve days before the opening of free agency.

"You all heard Mike Smith after Edmonton was eliminated, how emotional he was about the potential of his future. The Oilers have asked Mike Smith and Duncan Keith to let them know by around July 1st if they do plan on returning next year of if they are considering the potential of retirement. Smith was really banged up, Keith didn't say much publicly but I think the Oilers know that both those players have decisions to make and they've asked can we have an answer by around July 1st," Friedman said.

Keith, 38, was in his first season with Oilers after spending sixteen years with the Chicago Blackhawks. In 64 games during the regular season, he put up 21 points (one goal, 20 assists), 22 penalty minutes and was a plus-fifteen. He added five points in sixteen playoff games.

As for Mike Smith, he only appeared 28 games due to injuries and time spent on injured reserve. In those 28 games, he had a record of 16-9-2 with a 2.81 GAA, a .915 save percentage and two shutouts.
