If he was anything over his career, it was humble. After 19 seasons in the league, Jason Spezza announced his retirement from the NHL Sunday, adding that he was joining the Toronto Maple Leafs front office immediately. The fact that there was little else happening in the league Sunday was reportedly not an accident.
"Jason Spezza did not want his retirement announcement to distract from playoffs. Hence, the news on a non-game day, before Game 7 and conference finals take centre stage." - Luke Fox, Sportsnet.
Spezza hung up the skates to become a special assistant to Toronto GM Kyle Dubas. His knowledge of the game and its business side should prove to be a huge asset.
