Barry Trotz is a smart man, it is no secret. And smart men make smart decisions, which is why he is such a hot commodity. That and his 914 NHL wins (3rd most all time) & his 2018 Stanley Cup ring. As it were, since his dismissal from his post with the New York Islanders he's interviewed with two NHL teams. As of yesterday, he interviewed for the Winnipeg Jets for their head coaching job. The Jets are a logical choice, as they've got a solid core of players & he's from the area. However, smart men don't take the first offer they are given. They also take the wining & dining in stride, and why not? Free dinner. And as I said, Barry Trotz is a smart man.
Today, it was reported by Anthony SanFilippo, who covers the Philadelphia Flyers for BroadCrossing, that Trotz will interview for their head coaching gig on Friday.
Not so sure there's a fit there, as the Flyers are headed toward a brutal rebuild. After trading
Claude Giroux for pennies on the dollar, they don't have a very strong team & little to boast about in their prospect pipeline. It is for these reasons Barry Trotz is not expected to sign with the Flyers, though crazier things have happened. Trotz is wise to hear as many offers as possible. He's a figure that is desired in most locker rooms in the NHL, so he will have no shortage of suitors. It is all but a certainty he will interview with more NHL clubs as there are three other clubs not mentioned in this article with vacancies in the Head Coach position. The Vegas Golden Knights & Detroit Red Wings both need a bench boss, and there's a few other teams who may move on from their current coaches; the New Jersey Devils & San Jose Sharks to name a couple. More news is expected to come out in the next few months so stay tuned.
