The decision did not sit well with some Leaf fans who believe pro hockey trumps college hockey & education. This likely comes out of fear that Knies' rights with Toronto have an expiration date, so they don't want to see an Adam Fox situation where he leaves for nothing.
Knies has "unfinished business" according to Friedman.
Minnesota lost in embarrassing fashion to Minnesota State, the eventual runners-up. Knies cannot be happy about that, so it makes sense that he wants to run it back. Also, Toronto's forward unit is very deep so a spot is not guaranteed.
